RELATIVE CLAUSES (Adjective Clauses)

Relative Clause ile yapılan cümleler bir ismi niteler.Tek başlarına bir anlam ifade etmezler ancak bir cümle içinde anlam bütünlüğü sağlarlar.

Relative clause bir isimden sonra gelirler ve bir ismi tanımlar, niteler ya da daha fazla bilgi verir.

 

WHO, WHICH , THAT

I helped the woman[a1] [a1]. She was carrying heavy bags. [a2] [a2]

Bu iki cümleyi şu şekilde birleştirebiliriz:

I helped the woman who was carrying heavy bags.[a3] [a3]

                            That

Who : Kişilerle kullanılır.

Which: Cansız varlıklar ve hayvan isimleriyle kullanılır.

That: Hem who hem de which yerine kullanılır.

 

Örnekler:

1. The student is happy[a4] [a4]. He passed the exam[a5] [a5].   (The student ve he aynı kişi)

The student who /that passed the exam is happy.[a6] [a6]

2. The table is broken[a7] [a7]. It is in the kitchen.        [a8] [a8](The table ve it aynı kişi)

The table which / that  is in the kitchen is broken. [a9] [a9]

3. The people who /that sit there are from Germany. [a10] [a10]
4. The people who /that fear flying cannot travel by plane. [a11] [a11]
5. The bat is the only mammal which / that can fly. [a12] [a12]
6. She bought a bicycle which is designed for mountains. [a13] [a13]
